Have you ever participated in the “Trust” game? It’s the exercise where you stand in front of someone, close your eyes, and fall backward, trusting that they’ll catch you. I’ve engaged in that game a few times in my life, and to be honest, I’ve come to realize just how difficult trust can be for me. Trusting others has always been a significant challenge. After experiencing betrayal or hurt, it’s tempting to think, “I’ll never trust them—or anyone else—again.”
That mindset can quickly become a stronghold and somewhat of a dark place. We close ourselves off, doubting the intentions of those who enter our lives. While this may feel like self-preservation, it often leads to isolation and a growing sense of emptiness. The very walls we build to protect ourselves become the barriers that prevent deep connection—not just with others, but also with God.
In my own journey, I’ve learned that God’s invitation is not just to trust others but to trust Him completely. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Falling backward into someone’s arms takes courage, especially when fear whispers that no one will catch you. Trusting God often feels the same way. Life’s betrayals and disappointments may make it seem risky to surrender fully to Him. Yet, true surrender requires us to let go of our need to control, understand, or guard ourselves. It’s only when we empty ourselves of fear, doubt, and self-reliance that we can fall freely into God’s arms, trusting that He will always catch us.
God is not like the people who have hurt you. He is faithful, unchanging, and worthy of your trust. Psalm 62:8 encourages us:
“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”
Pouring out your heart—your pain, fears, and doubts—is a step toward surrender. It’s acknowledging that you can’t carry the burden of distrust alone. As you empty yourself before God, you create space for His peace, love, and healing to fill you.
Are you willing to fall backward into God’s arms today? Can you surrender your fears and doubts to Him, trusting that He is strong enough to hold you? Let this act of trust become your first step toward being truly empty for God, ready to receive all He has for you. Embrace this new month, fresh day, and this moment to place your trust in your Father for all things!
Reflection Questions:
1. Have you been holding on to distrust because of past hurts? How has that affected your relationships with others and with God?
2. What would it look like for you to trust God completely in this season of your life?
3. How can you create moments of surrender in your daily walk with Him?
Prayer:
Lord, trusting is hard for me. You know my pain and the walls I’ve built to protect myself. But today, I want to surrender those fears to You. Help me to trust in Your unfailing love and to fall freely into Your arms, knowing that You will never let me down. Make me empty of doubt and full of faith, ready to walk in Your peace and strength. Amen.
